Burkina Faso is one of the world’s poorest countries. The gross school enrolment ratio at the primary education level was from 46,5 % (38,9% girls) in 2001, while the primary school completion rate rose from 28% (22,8% girls).

The purpose of this new contribution is to support the efforts of the government of Burkina Faso to continue implementation of the PDDEB in order to accelerate the development of basic education, while guaranteeing an improvement in quality and satisfactory institutional and managerial capacity. Implementation of the PDDEB is also intended to reduce disparities (gender, disabled, social strata and geographical). The current project is part of a pooling of funds coordinated by Canada and other technical and financial partners, including France, Denmark, Sweden, Belgium, the World Bank, and the Netherlands (leader). PDDEB activities include constructing school infrastructure (schools, boreholes, and latrines), supplying equipment, teaching materials and school supplies, as well as capacity building.</pb:description><pb:status>Operational</pb:status><pb:start>2010</pb:start><pb:end>2016</pb:end><pb:countries><pb:country>Burkina-Faso: 100%</pb:country></pb:countries><pb:executingAgencyPartner>Government of Burkina Faso - Ministry of Economy and Finance</pb:executingAgencyPartner><pb:CIDASectorsOfFocus><pb:CIDASectorOfFocus>Improving health</pb:CIDASectorOfFocus><pb:CIDASectorOfFocus>Strengthening basic education</pb:CIDASectorOfFocus></pb:CIDASectorsOfFocus><pb:DACSectors><pb:DACSector>Primary education(011220): 40%</pb:DACSector><pb:DACSector>Education facilities and training(011120): 20%</pb:DACSector><pb:DACSector>Teacher training(011130): 15%</pb:DACSector><pb:DACSector>Basic life skills for youth and adults(011230): 15%</pb:DACSector><pb:DACSector>Health education(012261): 5%</pb:DACSector><pb:DACSector>Early childhood education(011240): 5%</pb:DACSector></pb:DACSectors><pb:maximumCIDAContribution>$ 50,000,000</pb:maximumCIDAContribution><pb:expectedResults>This is a new feature, part of CIDA's efforts towards increasing transparency.
