"A035060001","2013-03-04","Landmine Clearing for Results","This project supports mine clearing activities throughout Cambodia, taking into account lessons learned from past experiences. The multi-donor Trust Fund improves mechanisms for funding mine clearance in order to promote efficiency, accountability, and the targeting of mine clearance resources on development priorities established at national, provincial and local levels. The project works to strengthen the capacities for mine action policy-making, strategy formulation and prioritization of mine clearance tasks in accordance with development priorities established at provincial and local levels through participatory mechanisms. It allows for designated high priority contaminated land to be cleared, thus allowing renewed safe access to roads, infrastructure, land, and other resources. The renewed access to these resources is expected to promote economic growth and poverty reduction throughout the country.","Operational","2011","2016","Cambodia: 100%","UNDP - United Nations Development Programme - Cambodia","Democratic governance,Private sector development,Peace and security","Removal of land mines and explosive remnants of war(015250): 70%,Agricultural land resources(031130): 20%,Public sector policy and administrative management(015110): 10%","$ 10,000,000","This is a new feature, part of CIDA's efforts towards increasing transparency. Information will only be available for projects approved after October 15, 2011. For other projects, information on expected results is usually included in the description.","Results achieved as June 2012 include: the number of recorded landmine casualties decreased from 145 in 2010 to 98 in 2011, exceeding the target of an annual reduction of ten percent in the number of landmine casualties. In Pailin, Battambang and Banteay Meanchey provinces, 9.7 square kilometres of land were cleared for productive use. Over 56% of the cleared land is now used for agriculture, 7.4% for both agriculture and housing, 16.5% for road reconstruction, and 9.8% for housing. Overall, more than 15,000 people benefited directly from housing and agriculture, and over 200,000 people benefited indirectly, through risk reduction and through the public use of the cleared land for a school, roads, a pagoda, and other infrastructure. The project significantly enhanced the capacities of the Cambodian Mine Action and Victim Assistance Authority to undertake mine action planning and monitoring, and to ensure greater transparency and cost-efficiency in making land available to poor men and women living in rural areas. These activities have contributed to allocating resources according to national priorities and maximizing the land available for local agricultural development."
