Given that WFP is entirely voluntarily funded, it depends on donors in order to respond to the immediate food aid needs of affected populations during humanitarian crises or natural disasters. The IRA therefore plays a critical role in filling in funding gaps, to ensure that the basic food aid needs of the most vulnerable populations are met in a timely manner.

Historically, Canada has provided considerable support to the IRA, which is consistent with our desire to strengthen humanitarian agencies' rapid response capacity. This CIDA contribution allows WFP to make funding decisions based on wherever needs are the greatest.</pb:description><pb:status>Closed</pb:status><pb:start>2007</pb:start><pb:end>2007</pb:end><pb:countries><pb:country>Africa multiple countries: 50%</pb:country><pb:country>Asia multiple countries: 30%</pb:country><pb:country>Americas multiple countries: 15%</pb:country><pb:country>Europe multiple countries: 5%</pb:country></pb:countries><pb:executingAgencyPartner>WFP - World Food Programme</pb:executingAgencyPartner><pb:CIDASectorsOfFocus><pb:CIDASectorOfFocus>Emergency assistance</pb:CIDASectorOfFocus></pb:CIDASectorsOfFocus><pb:DACSectors><pb:DACSector>Emergency food aid(072040): 100%</pb:DACSector></pb:DACSectors><pb:maximumCIDAContribution>$ 3,500,000</pb:maximumCIDAContribution><pb:expectedResults>This is a new feature, part of CIDA's efforts towards increasing transparency.
