The program aims to reduce HIV transmission and increase the continuum of care for HIV-positive individuals and their families in Ethiopia and Niger. The program enables and assists community based organizations to address and eliminate gaps to help create a more cohesive HIV/AIDS care system.
Expected Results
This is a new feature, part of CIDA's efforts towards increasing transparency. Information will only be available for projects approved after October 15, 2011. For other projects, information on expected results is usually included in the description.
Progress and Results Achieved
Results achieved as of March 2012 include: (1) In Niger, there has been a consistent increase in voluntary HIV testing and counselling at the partner hospital, including a 35% increase in the number of pregnant women tested for HIV in order to prevent mother to child transmission. Screening of blood donors was introduced in January 2012 and has resulted in over 2,600 donors being tested and 52 HIV+ donors being detected and provided with counselling and treatment. (2) In Ethiopia, mobile testing was introduced in response to local requests to provide services to populations unlikely to be tested at static locations, thereby increasing the community reach of the program. Home-based care programs were established to provide medical, nutritional and educational support to HIV+ patients and their families, with an annual average of 90 patients in Addis Ababa and over 260 in Shashemene.
