Haitians stricken by the violent earthquake that rocked Haiti on January 12, 2010, continue to experience extremely difficult living conditions, especially in the areas of Jacmel, Léogâne, and Port-au-Prince, where the earthquake's epicentre was located.
Their needs are still enormous, and it will take many years for the country to recover and rebuild. Even now, damaged infrastructure requires major work, and several essential services are not yet back up and running.
Canada has provided emergency humanitarian assistance to Haitians affected by this tragedy and is contributing to recovery efforts underway throughout Haiti.
Canada has a deep, longstanding commitment to Haiti and remains firmly resolved to support the rebuilding of that country, chiefly by supporting the Haitian government's action plan and priorities.
CIDA is the main federal government agency responsible for humanitarian assistance and international cooperation. With the support of its trusted partners, it is doing everything it can to ensure that Canada response to the disaster is effective and meets the needs of the people of Haiti.
