Minister Oda's statement on tropical storm Washi in the Philippines

December 19, 2011

Late last week, Tropical Storm Washi passed over the islands of the southern Philippines. Torrential rains caused extensive flash flooding, displacing 88,000 people from their homes and affecting more than 167,500 people. Philippines authorities are also reporting that 662 people have died and another 82 are missing. While the storm is over, its impact appears to be worse than expected.

The Government of the Philippines and humanitarian organizations on the ground are assessing the impact of the storm. The Philippines Government has not requested international assistance at this time.

The Government of Canada will continue to monitor the situation closely and stands ready to assist the people of the Philippines in this time of need.
