Aid Effectiveness Agenda

Strengthening Aid Effectiveness

For several decades, Canada has sought to improve the quality of life of people in developing countries.

In 2009, the Government of Canada developed a new action plan to make its international aid even more targeted and effective, and to ensure better reporting of results to Canadians.

Aid effectiveness

Aid effectiveness means aid that yields concrete, sustainable results-aid that makes the best possible use of resources and maximizes benefits. The Government of Canada is improving its programs to achieve this. For e.g. Canada announced in 2008 its decision to untie its food aid and to untie all its aid by 2013.

Targeted aid

Canada has decided to invest 80 percent of bilateral resources in 20 Countries of Focus. Activities are also more targeted in each country, reflecting the challenges and priorities of each country. Our aid will thus yield more concrete results that will truly make a difference.

A comprehensive approach

Canada's new approach to aid effectiveness reflects the priority themes that guide CIDA's work: increasing food security, stimulating sustainable economic growth, and securing the future of children and youth.
