There's a new way of doing things in Africa. Development is working. And it's getting results.
African leaders now have a shared vision for the continent's sustainable development. This vision, the New Partnership for Africa's Development, or NEPAD, emphasizes democratic governance and accountability, economic growth and Africans' responsibility for their own development.
Canada's contributions to African development are achieving results.
There is clear progress: Africa is the continent with the most potential for growth, and is currently experiencing the most sustained period of economic growth it has seen in more than two decades. Real progress towards more stable and open political systems is occurring, as more governments adhere to the rule of law and respect human rights.
Sub-Saharan Africa still has far to go to lift its people out of poverty: the HIV/AIDS pandemic, weak health systems, conflict, corruption, drought, and inequality between women and men remain significant challenges. Populations exploding with the highest birth rates in the world are taxing national social systems and infrastructure. Burgeoning primary schools need more teachers, classrooms and textbooks.
The Government of Canada is committed to taking on these challenges with African, Canadian and international partners. Together we are taking a 'big picture' approach that is both strategic and sustainable. The rewards benefit us all: in a global village, ending poverty is as much in the interest of rich countries as poor. Disparities among nations are sources of ongoing tension. State borders don't stop poverty, conflict and disease.
Canada's contributions to African development are achieving results. More children are attending school. Access to health care is expanding. Women are gaining a new place and voice in society.
The following stories of innovation, determination and success demonstrate some of the real impacts on communities, countries, and the continent. Sustainable development in Africa is not just a vision: development works!
