Appendix 4 – Environmental Policies and Practices

Criteria

1. Environmental assessments

The applicant's policies and practices require the applicant to assess the environmental effects of projects and to implement mitigation measures that reduce the negative environmental effects of those projects to an acceptable level while augmenting the positive effects.

2. Best practices

The applicant's policies and practices require the applicant to respect international environmental best practices in project design.

3. Environmental management system

The applicant's policies and practices require the applicant to establish and maintain an environment management system (EMS), including assigning responsibility for the monitoring of environmental performance and follow-up to specific posts in the organization.

4. Environmental Drug Management Plan

The applicant's policies and procedures require the applicant to establish and maintain an environmental drug-management plan for all donations of medicines projects which address the following:

A. Prevention of accumulating drug surplus

The Environmental Drug Management Plan addresses how to prevent the accumulation of a drug surplus, and unnecessary and/or waste drugs in any given country. This issue is best addressed by coordinating the importation of drugs with the relevant national institutions in the recipient country.

B. Identifying suitable in-country drug disposal

The Environmental Drug Management Plan identifies, for each country where drugs are delivered, the availability of suitable in-country disposal methods and facilities for each class of drug being imported, and identifies the national authorities responsible for the safe disposal of waste or otherwise unused/unnecessary drugs. In the absence of suitable in-country disposal methods, the organization will establish a disposal plan that is justifiable for each class of drug before it is imported.
