What We Do in Eastern Europe

After the disintegration of the Soviet Union, Western countries sought to support the transition by Eastern bloc countries to market economies and democracy. Canada, through CIDA, provided vital support in this transition. Since then, the region has seen much progress, and some former aid recipients have now become donors in their own right such as Poland and Slovakia.

As part of Canada's Aid Effectiveness Agenda, CIDA's bilateral or geographic program focuses on the Ukraine in this region.

CIDA also supports multilateral and global programs in parts of Eastern Europe, as well as Partnerships with Canadians Programs.
