Cape Breton University, Copperbelt University and Chainama Hills College
have recently been awarded a five year CIDA/ CCPP funded project entitled
"Diarrhea and Malaria in Children". Cape Breton have been working in the Zambia
and the region since 1995, hence, there are already very good linkages. The
project is focused on reducing under five mortality in Copperbelt Province and
will help Copperbelt University and Chainama Hills College upgrade their
programming, provide capital support, and professional development for faculty.
The project will also help both institutions expand their outreach program
including increased numbers of workplacements for their students. In Canada In addition to the orientation briefing described elsewhere in this proposal, the in Canada tasks for this internship will include: - become familiar with diarrhea, malaria, acute respiratory infections and related health stresses; - learn about participatory strategies that involve community leaders; - produce a draft report that describes low cost approaches to community environmental health, e.g. strategies to improve waste management, water management, remove stagnant water associated with malaria, improve excreta disposal, improve management of water points such as taps and wells, and others. Overseas The intern's mandate in Zambia includes the following: - establish a working relationship with the Institute for Environmental Management, Copperbelt University, home base for the work; - establish a working relationship with peri-urban community leaders and community health committees in the Kitwe area; - work with the communities to determine their health education needs related to malaria, diarrhea and other health stresses; - the intern will include the special challenges of orphans and vulnerable children, by working closely with orphanages and other centres for youth. For example, the training should encourage orphans to help recognize when other orphans have an unusual body temperature (perhaps malaria) and help them seek medical attention. Sometimes orphanages have no adults, and in this region, orphans and vunlerable children constitute 15% of the total population. |
