| Position Description: |
For the duration of the internship, the intern will assist the National
Assembly in developing various support mechanisms, fundraising strategies, and
capacity building activities devoted to improving the lives and opportunities
of youth living with disabilities in Antigua and Barbuda. In Canada 1. Learn about Canadian, Caribbean, and global disability issues, particularly those pertinent to youth. 2. Become familiar with the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. 3. Complete a training program on communications planning, capacity building, and fundraising strategies. 4. Visit and learn from disability organizations in Winnipeg, including the Council of Canadians with Disabilities (CCD), the Independent Living Resource Centre (ILRC), and the Canadian Centre on Disability Studies (CCDS). Overseas Under the guidance of the DPI Caribbean Regional Office, the intern will research, plan, implement, and manage projects and strategies related to human rights promotion, capacity building and fundraising, with relation to improving the lives of youth with disabilities. In the area of human rights promotion the intern will: 1. Aid a group of youth living with disabilities in planning a media campaign to promote a positive image of persons with disabilities in Antigua and Barbuda; 2. Help develop a strategy to promote the integration of persons with disabilities in primary and secondary schools, community activities, and the community at large, including accessible public transportation; and 3. Focus on the capacity of persons with disabilities and encourage employers to hire and accommodate employees with disabilities. In the area of capacity building the intern will: 1. Assist in the coordination of capacity building activities, such as the planning and organization of youth-specific workshops, seminars, and skills training. Possible areas of focus include sexual education and computer training; 2. Recruit youth throughout the region and offer assistance in the creation of an online youth network; and 3. Assist interested youth in forming support groups that will address various needs -- for examples, adolescent peer support groups, or sports associations. In the area of fundraising the intern will: 1. Assist in the development of a national fundraising strategy to meet the needs of the organization's objectives and activities; 2. Create a database of potential funders that may be drawn upon for future use; and 3. Assist in the submission of funding proposals for various projects. |

ABAPD was founded and managed by persons with disabilities and is a duly constituted and registered not-for-profit organization, guided by the aims and objectives embodied in its Constitution in advocating for the rights and equality of persons with disabilities, while providing support and services where possible. Its mission is to provide the environment which enhances and maximizes the opportunity for every person with a physical, psychological, intellectual and/or sensory impairment and/or limitation in Antigua and Barbuda to achieve his/her full potential in his/her economic, social, religious and political life. |
