Position Description:

This internship is being offered under long-term projects by Carrefour de solidarité internationale (CSI) and its overseas partner CEPAE. This internship in an international cooperation environment is under the supervision of CSI and the overseas partner. Integration into the community and intercultural exchanges are also part of the internship: accommodation with a host family, adaptation to different work procedures, and discovery of new material and social realities.

The intern will be required to pay a financial counterpart of $530 and will receive a monthly allowance of $740 during the first seven months of the internship, in addition to room and board in Nizao-Las Auyamas. Follow-up with a professional regarding employability, as well as a skills assessment, will also be available to the participant.

Description of Assignment in the Dominican Republic

  • Conduct a diagnostic study of key social issues in the community of Nizao-Las Auyamas.
  • Organize meetings with social organizations and the municipality to discuss the results of the diagnostic study and explore courses of action.
  • Organize and facilitate meetings with the municipality to strengthen its skills and knowledge of the participatory budget process.
  • Organize meetings between grass-roots organizations and the municipality to develop a joint action plan.

Qualifications:
  • Is between 19 and 30 years of age upon signing the contract.
  • Recently completed undergraduate studies in one of the following areas of specialization: social work techniques, social work, political studies, international relations, master's degree in communication or other related fields.
  • Is not a student and is not enrolled in an academic program upon signing the contract.
  • Is a Canadian citizen or is a permanent resident who is entitled to work in Canada.
  • Is unemployed or underemployed (that is, employed in a field other than his/her field of studies or in a job that does not reflect his/her qualifications).
  • Is available from May to December 2011.
  • Is proficient in Spanish.
  • Is highly adaptable and self-reliant, and has good verbal communication skills.

The intern will take part in a CEPAE project to strengthen its activities in recent years in the area of citizen engagement and good governance in the municipal district of Nizao-Las Auyamas. The internship’s objective is to build knowledge and capacities among members of six community organizations in areas relating to citizen engagement. Finally, the intern will provide training on the Dominican Republic’s legislation and reforms, and on transparency in municipal management, with a view to forming a watchdog committee to promote cosultation between the municipality and community organizations.
