Position Description:


  • work within USDC's mandate to provide education and support at a community level to children with disabilities and their families.
  • develop a needs assessment in collaboration with the current site Supervisor at USDC,
  • select one sustainable project from the needs assessment to complete during this internship.
  • enhance services already provided through USDC.
  • develop outcome measures to determine the effectiveness of programs and services provided by USDC.
  • further development of a parent support network,
  • family teaching regarding: child development, strengths based programming, community desensitization,
  • individual support planning for youth with disabilities.
  • participation in daily activities at USDC and participation in all on-site and off-site outreach activities.
  • report directly to the site Supervisor and will work closely with all allied staff at USDC.
  • develop close working relationships with the children, families, and communities that USDC serves.

Qualifications:
  • Graduate of a relevant post-secondary professional or academic program
  • A pattern of courses, work, and volunteer experience that indicates a career goal in the social service or education area.
  • Experience in working with special needs children
  • Knowledge of child development theory and practice
  • Advanced organizational, writing, and communication skills
  • Ability to work well independently and as part of a team
  • Initiative, maturity, and self-responsibility
  • Understanding of child development and impact of poverty, HIV / AIDS, and other challenges facing people in developing countries
  • Knowledge of culture perspectives, practices and common interventions with children with disabilities
  • Understanding of values and beliefs, and their impact, surrounding individuals with disabilities at an individual level, family level, community level, and societal level.
