Over the past nine years, CAUSE Guatemala has partnered with the
Comitancillo Fruit Growers Association to build the organization to increase
the standard of living for the members and their community. Since 1997, the
cooperative has grown from 12 members to 509 members. To date, 20 community
nurseries and one central commercial nursery have been developed to grow fruit
and non-fruit trees for members and for sale to others. Throughout this
program, a primary focus has been on improving the standard of living in the
communities while renewing the integrity of the environment and enhancing
gender equality. Seventy-five percent of members are women. Illiteracy is very
high among the indigenous women of the area, estimated to be about 70%. This
program will contribute to women's literacy, numeracy, financial management,
business and leadership skills, in addition to their family and environmental
The intern will fully participate in the CAUSE orientation sessions, learning about CAUSE policies and projects, studying culture shock and possible strategies to deal with it, and acquiring many other skills necessary for a successful internship.
The intern will also participate in the final debriefing, reviewing their experiences on the field with CAUSE and each other. The intern will complete an evaluation of their internship, prepare for post-internship pursuits, and engage in public engagement activities. These outreach activities will raise public awareness of intern experiences, CAUSE and CIDA programs, and Canada's role in international development.
The Microbusiness Consultant will work with the CAUSE Guatemala Representative and the local partners to:
Transfer skills to local partners and participants regarding effective business management;
Provide advice on marketing and promotion for business expansion, especially among women.
Evaluate the effectiveness of the programming and make recommendations as to how it can improve;
Report to CAUSE Guatemala Representative and the CAUSE Canada Program Director.

CAUSE Canada was instrumental in starting CAUSE Guatemala in 1987, and the two offices have been working in partnership ever since. CAUSE Guatemala operates in accordance with same policies and guidelines as CAUSE Canada. Through the efforts of this partnership other local organizations have been created: IMDI (Todos Santos) and the Comitancillo Fruit Growers Association (Comitancillo). Over the last 19 years, CAUSE Guatemala has implemented community water projects, primary health care programs, micro-enterprise programs, reforestation projects, and women's training programs.|
