The Guyana Municipal Governance and Management Program (MGMP) provides
technical support and assistance to help the Government of Guyana (Ministry of
Local Government and Regional Development) and the country's six municipalities
to foster good governance and reduce poverty in order to develop sustainable
communities. MGMP works in collaboration with Guyana municipalities to further
the coordination and implementation of capacity-building activities within the
municipalities. The Union of Nova Scotia Municipalities provides technical
support to the municipalities on various projects.
The focus of the internship is on the overseas component. In-Canada activities will include pre-departure briefing & cultural orientation, review of background project documentation, travel logistics and meetings with Canadian project team members to discuss project activities and the overall approach to international development. Where practical, meetings with former interns who have traveled to the country under the Canadian Institute of Planners program will also be arranged.
In collaboration with the Program Manager in Guyana, the intern will:
- support and work in collaboration with the Union of Nova Scotia Municipalities.
- assist MGMP Program Officers and Municipal Development Officers in advancing their activities.
In conjunction with MGMP, the Guyana municipalities have identified issues, areas of cooperation, planned activities and expected results for their municipal capacity building projects. The intern will work under the direct supervision of the MGMP Country Program Manager to assist with the realization of the municipal agendas. The intern will be fully integrated within the team of Guyanese staff. S/he will work in coordination with the Union of
Nova Scotia Municipalities (UNSM), and Canadian and Guyanese consultants involved in MGMP. The intern will also take part in various activities undertaken with local governments.
The intern will be primarily responsible for assisting in the development, coordination, delivery, and evaluation of project-related initiatives undertaken in the Environment, Health and Municipal Service Delivery outcome area. The position will involve direct on-site service/task provision in Georgetown, Guyana. In particular, the intern will provide substantial support to the municipalities in the following areas: the development of public private partnerships; environmental awareness and education; and community-based environmental small projects. Specific Internship duties will include:
- Assisting MGMP with the organization of project activities in Guyana (i.e. technical mission, workshops and meetings);
- Supporting MGMP to undertake research on key urban development problems facing the local authorities and to prepare the necessary reporting documentation for the development of local projects;
- Assisting MGMP with the coordination and implementation of capacity-building activities within the municipalities; - Helping to monitor environmental projects in the municipalities and to prepare and provide project reports as requested; and,
- Travel to municipalities to provide input in project design and implementation.
