Description du stage : One Sky is working in partnership with the Conservation Society of Sierra Leone (CSSL) to implement "Growing at the Grassroots: A Cooperative Approach to Agriculture in Kono District, Sierra Leone". The program aims to increase food security for women and war-affected youth by increasing access to arable land and has been funded by the CIDA Innovation Fund. Through an integrated, cooperative approach the program will support organic agriculture as a viable alternative to diamond mining in Kono. This project builds on 3 years of One Sky supporting a local agriculturalist to work with four farmer's and women's groups.

In Canada
In Canada the intern will work on food security initiatives in the Bulkley Valley. This will include encouraging consumers to buy locally-produced organic food through a booth at the farmer's market and display at the Fall Fair, potentially organizing a 100 mile diet pot luck, and coordinating volunteers and donations as part of the 'harvest project' - where excess produce from gardens and fruit trees are collected and distributed to local service agencies. The intern will also work with other interns to coordinate an annual One Sky fundraising and outreach event.

The intern will work with Conservation Society of Sierra Leone, based in Kono District. The intern will work with a local agriculturalist to carry out workshops and other agriculture extension activities designed to increase the capacity of local women's and community groups in organic agricultural techniques. This may include demonstration projects of appropriate technology such as basket composts and solar dehydrators. The intern may also work with CSSL and project staff to implement a pilot restoration of formerly mined land for agricultural use.
