| Description du stage : |
CSSL has a mandate to educate people in Kono regarding environmental
issues. The Environmental Education department at CSSL implements a number of
activities including outreach through a weekly radio program, educational
activities during wildlife week and other international days, promoting
education through the Takugama primate sanctuary and through the support of
Conservation Clubs in primary and secondary schools throughout the Lakka
penninsula. CSSL is also a key member of ENFORAC - Environmental Forum for
Action - a network of environmental NGOs in Sierra Leone which seeks to address
nine key issues in the Western Area Peninsula including forestry, energy and
gender issues. In Canada While in Canada, the intern will work on a Global Classroom Initiative project entitled "West Africa Alive!". The intern will assist One Sky and the educators implementing the GCI project to design materials for teachers and students on a simulation of an environment-oriented development project in West Africa for grade six students. The intern will also design outreach materials for the project and assist in organizing a schools tour. The intern will also promote sustainable living solutions through a booth at the Bulkley Valley Fall Fair, promotion of One Sky's environmental resource centre and will work with other interns to coordinate the annual One Sky fundraising and outreach event. Overseas While in Sierra Leone, the intern will be based in Kono with the Conservation Society of Sierra Leone. Working with environmental education staff, the intern will continue to develop the very successful 'murals project' initiated by a former One Sky intern - engaging local artists, fundraising for supplies and space for the murals and designing environmental messaging. The intern will participate in designing and implementing weekly radio shows on the environment; provide support to local Conservation Clubs by visiting schools, providing materials and encouraging and supporting environmental projects by students; and will continue to develop the CSSL resource centre to make it 'user friendly' such as posting environmental articles about Sierra Leone, current projects and potential volunteer opportunities. The intern might also help develop education and outreach materials for the "Growing at the Grassroots" project in Kono. The intern will also represent One Sky and participate in current ENFORAC activities, particularly those related to environmental education and outreach. |
