The objective of this project is to enhance the capacity of the Women's
Coalition of Zimbabwe to achieve its mission, that is, to achieve gender equity
and equality through the creation of a forum and space for women to meet in
solidarity, for the initiation of and participation in strategies and actions
for the collective lobbying and advocacy, information sharing, monitoring and
evaluation of women's achievements.
The Women's Coalition of Zimbabwe (WCoZ) was formed in 1999 by a number of women activists and NGOs. The WCoZ has been very active in the issue of constitutional reform and is presently very active in having the Domestic Violence Bill passed by Parliament.
In 2005 Canadian Crossroads began to develop a capacity building relationship with WCoZ. The WCoZ is a network of 30 prominent women's organizations with national structures; this network has indicated the need for a common communication strategy within and outside of the network.
The Canadian portion of this activity will have two phases. The first phase will take place with the Canadian partner organization. During this phase the intern will learn and become conversant with advocacy and communication policies and strategies of NGOs in Newfoundland working in the area of gender. The intern will develop an understanding of working with media, the flow of information within the civil society network and the internal flow of information within an organization. The intern will develop an understanding of current issues in Zimbabwe through contacts with Memorial University and previous Crossroads participants who have lived in Zimbabwe. The second Canadian phase of this internship will take place after the intern returns to Newfoundland. The intern will be expected to lead public engagement sessions addressing gender issues in Zimbabwe. The intern will be expected to further develop the partnership between the northern partner and the WCoZ through the local media and through enhancing communication between the partners.
Overseas the intern will asses the communication capabilities and strategies of the member organizations of the Coalition. From this analysis and working collectively with the Coalition, the intern will create a communications strategy for the Coalition. As the Coalition membership receives a tremendous amount of information through the internet, the intern will create variety of strategies to address the smooth and appropriate flow of information.
At present the Coalition has one part-time information officer; the intern will work with this officer to develop communication strategies.
The intern will create an evaluation tool to assess the strategies.
