The Safeguarding Biodiversity for Poverty Reduction Project (SBPRP) in
Cambodia, Lao PDR, and Vietnam, is one of five components of the GMS
Biodiversity Conservation Corridors Initiative (BCI) funded by the ADB. It is
the component addressing poverty alleviation through sustainable use of natural
resources and development of livelihoods.
The SBPRP will work in pilot sites in each of the three countries. The primary aim of the SBPRP is to measure and assess the ability of community protected area management approaches to deliver poverty reduction, sustainable use and conservation outcomes. The project will involve research, assessment, and targeted livelihood interventions to positively influence the co-management framework.
The Lower Mekong Country Group (CG-1) encompasses IUCN country activities across a range of thematic areas, programs and projects. This Country Group provides overall guidance and support to the SBPRP and similar initiatives, such as the Livelihoods and Landscapes Programme in the Lower Mekong Region.
Prior to their departure, interns will sign a contract and begin to prepare for their placements by conducting research, contacting their supervisor overseas, applying for their visa, getting their vaccinations, and attending a 7 day pre-departure training in Winnipeg where they will be expected to actively contribute to discussions. They will also attend a debrefing session upon their return to Canada.
The intern will be working on two projects:
1) Safeguarding Biodiversity for Poverty Reduction Project.
1.1. Assist the project team with planning and implementation of ongoing project activities in Lao, Cambodia and Vietnam
1.2. Help document lessons and experience from project activities in the three countries
1.3. Liaise with project partners, especially in Vietnam
1.4. Assist with the organization of various meetings or events
1.5. Assisting with the implementation of SBPRP field activities in the Vietnam Pilot site (located in Quang Nam Province)
1.6. Produce high quality written materials, including reports and communications
1.7. Assist with the preparation of proposals and other funding applications as necessary
2. Lower Mekong Country Group Responsibilities
2.1. Assist with coordination of CG-1 activities
2.2. Help with day-to-day requests for administrative or specific technical support

IUCN is an important partner in many sustainable development related initiatives implemented globally on issues of climate change, biodiversity, land degradation and sustainable livelihoods. IISD is a member of IUCN. IISD and IUCN have been working together for over 10 years. The IUCN Vietnam office has worked extensively in the past with IISD's trade program. IISD's work on access and benift sharing within the biodiversity convention will be shared with IUCN Vietnam through the internship.|
