Within the framework of its CIDA-funded partnership program, CUI has
launched its Urban Partnerships Project Ethiopia (UPP Ethiopia). The goal of
UPP Ethiopia is to build the capacity and strengthen the institutions of city
governments in Ethiopia by sharing technical expertise and know-how.
The intern will spend the Canadian portion of the internship preparing for the overseas component, by arranging for the logistics for the overseas stay; by conducting background research on the host country, host organization, associated CUI project, and relevant topics; and by familiarizing his/herself with the cultural and business practices of the host country. Following the overseas portion, the intern will debrief, write his/her final report, and begin his/her job search.
The intern will join the CUI office in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, working under the supervision of the Project Manager.
The intern will support the Manager to develop and implement a strategy that supports local and national partners to adopt principles of UN HABITAT's Global Campaign on Urban Governance. She/he will research best practices applicable to Addis Ababa and advise partners on actions to improve local governance processes.
The intern will be assigned the following activities:
- Support Project Manager to compile and present to partners good governance best practices.
- Using participatory methodologies, review partner processes and produce a formal evaluation detailing strengths, threats, weaknesses and opportunities for improved governance at the local-level, including actions that contribute to UN HABITAT's Global Campaign on Urban Governance.
- Assist partners to produce participatory action plans for projects that contribute to urban sustainability and poverty reduction.

The intern(s) will be placed in the Canadian Urban Institute - Ethiopia Country Office, which is located in the City of Addis Ababa. In Ethiopia, with CIDA funding, CUI is contributing to UN HABITAT's Global Campaign on Urban Governance, including urban sustainability and poverty reduction.|
