In CanadaPrior to the overseas placement, the intern
will learn about the PLUS Network activities and engagement with member cities,
as well as reviewing youth and public engagement strategies. The intern will
receive training about models of resource mobilization, participatory planning
and decision making procedures, tools for youth and community engagement, asset
mapping, and incorporating the special needs of young women into community
planning. The intern will be responsible for learning about the City of San
Jose and Costa Rica and doing some pre-departure preparations.
In San Jose, the intern will work on a project called 'San Jose 2050, the Youth and their City'. The focus of this project will be to engage youth in visioning for their future and the future of their cities. The intern will use a variety of tools and outreach methods for this process. Some of these may include developing and employing a set of visioning questions for youth to answer, attending public events, using cartoons and marketing material, doing asset mapping and photo-visioning.
The intern will work directly with the City of San Jose's planning team and the city's PLUS Network coordinator. In addition, the local Ministry of Education, universities, primary/secondary schools, and NGOs will be engaged in the process. The goal for this project will be to assist San Jose in developing a youth vision for long-term sustainability planning and the future of the city. The intern will also be involved in documenting local sustainability initiatives pertinent to the PLUS Network.
