|Description du stage :||
CUI is active in the Western Visayas region of the Philippines pursuing
a theme of "making decentralization work," assisting our three partner local
governments to meet the challenges of the country's thrust to decentralize
national powers and responsibilities to local governments. Within the framework
of the Urban Partnerships Project Philippines (UPP Philippines), CUI supports
our partners to develop model approaches and generate new ideas for advancing
urban sustainability and poverty reduction in cities. UPP Philippintes has
three major emphases, working at different scales: 1) City level - sustaining
and deepening good urban governance in CUI's three priority centres, supporting
our long-term partners - Metro Iloilo, Province of Guimaras and Municipality of
Malay - to sustain and deepen the gains they have made in good urban governance
over the past decade; 2) Regional level - catalyzing change in cities across
the Western Visayas region, helping our three long-term partners to become core
knowledge centres networked with 16 other cities across the region, sharing
their expertise, know-how and approaches; 3) National level - generating new
ideas for sustainable urban development across the Philippines.
The intern will spend the Canadian portion of the internship preparing for the overseas component, by arranging for the logistics for the overseas stay; by conducting background research on the host country, host organization, associated CUI project, and relevant topics; and by familiarizing his/herself with the cultural and business practices of the host country. Following the overseas portion, the intern will debrief, write his/her final report, and begin his/her job search.
The intern will join the CUI office in the Philippines and work with the project team and local municipal partners under the direct supervision of the CUI Regional Manager. The intern will share Canada's experience in city planning, contributing case studies and advising on the development of a curriculum for a series of short-courses, targeting professional urban planners in the Western Visayas region. The intern will be assigned the following activities:
- Compile and present to partners Canadian case studies illustrating Canada's experience in city planning, focusing on a range of topics that may include civic engagement, investing in the public realm, and building community assets.
- Recommend knowledge management strategies, identifying tools and methodologies for sharing ideas and experiences.
- Using participatory methodologies, support an advisory committee of chief planners and academics to develop a curriculum for a series of short-courses on city planning designed to upgrade skills and knowledge of practicing urban planners in the Metro Iloilo and Western Visayas region.
