Description du stage : The WPU is involved in research and extension activities ranging from biodiversity and fisheries/coastal resource management. Beneficiaries of projects are the local government units, private entities, Non Government Organizations, and communities.

In Canada
The intern will undertake extensive predeparture preparation prior to their overseas posting including: research of host organization and country; health assessment /immunizations, travel arrangements and accommodations; access to intern resource centre/library; and one week prior to departure, all interns meet at MI for briefings. During the week, the interns will undertake consultations with former interns, faculty members, and expats; and participate in a three-day predeparture briefing conducted by The Centre for Intercultural Learning (CIL). This briefing includes: cross-cultural effectiveness (e.g. communicating with difficult people, emotional intelligence); culture shock awareness; personal and professional career planning and goal setting; health and safety; gender issues related to local context; international and country development issues; presentations to one another; and group work. Interns are trained in results based management and report writing. Interns are provided contact information for host organization and supervisor to allow for introductions, delineation of duties, and expression of desired outcomes or expectations prior to departure. Interns are also matched with a network of local/national/ international contacts within their field.

Overseas
One main focus of this internship will be on project planning and design of coastal resource and fisheries management projects in the province. The job will include introduction of new and applicable approaches to local fisheries/coastal management. The intern will also make their own evaluation on the existing, on-going, and give advice to improve future fisheries management in selected coastal towns. The intern will be engaged in some travel within the province to directly or indirectly involve themself in Coastal Resource Management (CRM) projects.

Détails au sujet de l'organisation d'accueil : The Western Philippines University (WPU) is mandated by the Philippine Government to perform four main functions: 1) academic instruction, 2) research, 3) extension work, and 4) production. The Western Philippines University has the distinction of being the second University in terms of research, following the University of the Philippines in Los Banos, Laguna. The Bachelor of Science in Fisheries Program of the University, which is based at Puerto Princesa City has been the Center of Excellence, as awarded by the Commission on Higher Education, for Fisheries Education for the Region since 1999. The University is still enjoying the status until present. The Fisheries and the Aquatic Biology programs of the University is known both in Palawan and across the other regions of the country for their research and extension works on biodiversity conservation and coastal resource management.
