Mandat : OC's International Development Centre provides OC students, faculty, staff, and community members with a window on the realities and opportunities of the developing world. IDC operates within the OC internationalisation strategy to expose OC community members to and involve them in the issues of the developing world through exchanges, training of overseas personnel on OC programs, internships, classroom and community presentations, professional development opportunities, consultancies, and program development. IDC is a signature program of the Salmon Arm campus of OC and builds on the current and completed community development projects located in West Africa and co-ordinated through Salmon Arm over the past eleven years. Okanagan College is a comprehensive community college offering a variety of technical, vocational, academic upgrading, and university transfer level courses. OC focuses on serving the educational needs of the Okanagan-Shuswap community.

Description du stage : OICI assists mining companies in the following areas in order that they can meet best practices and international World Bank/IFC performance standards for resettlement, relocation, compensation and community development planning. OICI works closely with mining companies in the following areas: 1)Designing baseline and livelihood studies and collecting data on mine-affected populations 2)Stakeholder Identification and Analysis 3)Social Impact Assessments (SIA); and Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA)4) Design and implementation of Alternative Livelihood and Community Development programs 5)Resettlement and Relocation Planning and Case Work 6)Training & Capacity building for community consultative groups and mine staff
7) Design and implementation of public consultation and information disclosure plans
8) Monitoring and Evaluation of Program Impacts

In Canada
Interns will participate in pre-departure training and post-overseas debriefing and re-entry. IDC/OC staff will facilitate pre-departure training and debriefing that will adress the following: Monthly reporting and final report submission, cultural and language training, health and wellness, contract agreements, post-internship job searching strategies and resume writing, effective re-entry awareness and support, personal reflection opportunities, evaluations of experiences and learnings while overseas, sharing of journals, and the completion of program reports and CIDA evaluations. Interns will be asked to give feedback to IDC/OC staff on a number of program areas to be documented in reports to CIDA and applied to future programs and funded international internship possibilities. Also during the this time the interns will participate in outreach activities that will raise awareness of CIDA internships and international development in general.

Overseas
The intern will:
- Provide technical support to senior management team
- Research grant and proposal options
- Assist in proposal and report writing
- Help with public relations and fundraising Initiatives
- Present workshops on business practices
- Handle inquiries from the field and serve as go between field offices and the OICI country head office
- Edit monthly reports from the field

OICI designs programs in developing and transitional countries that provide training, and support equipment, infrastructure, and services in areas of vocational and technical skills, agriculture and rural development, health and nutrition, post-conflict rehabilitation, entrepreneurship and business development and micro-finance. In doing this, OIC International hopes to promote self-reliance and increased productivity in the development of local rural communities.
