Mandat : Sustainable Cities International is a Canadian non-governmental organization and registered charity, with a mission to promote sustainable urban development around the world through practical demonstration projects, peer learning networks, affiliations and high profile events. Over the past 17 years, Sustainable Cities has received international recognition for its contribution to addressing the linkages between environmental degradation, poverty and social inequity. Sustainable Cities promotes good governance through capacity building with grassroots community organizations and local governments to improve human settlements and the quality of urban life in cities in the developing world. Sustainable Cities’ projects advance environmental sustainability through participatory multi-stakeholder processes that involve municipal councils, community organizations and the private and academic sectors working together to build sustainable livelihoods and communities.

Sustainable Cities is the Secretariat for the Sustainable Cities International Network, an international peer learning network of cities sharing experiences, expertise and tools to undertake long term planning for urban sustainability. To date, the Network is comprised of 40 cities worldwide in Africa, North America, Central America, South America, Asia and Australia.

Villes Durables est une organisation non-gouvernementale qui a pour mission de catalyser l'action pour le développement durable urbain dans les villes du monde au moyen de projets de démonstration pratiques, de réseaux d’apprentissage entre pairs, d'affiliations et d'événements de haut niveau. Au cours des 17 dernières années, Ville Durables a reçu la reconnaissance internationale pour ses contributions d’exploration, particulièrement les liens entre la dégradation environnementale, la pauvreté et l’iniquité sociale. Le Réseau compte à ce jour près de 40 villes membres réparties dans cinq continents.

Description du stage : Project Description:
The Project Officers will be placed in the City Environment and Natural Resource Office where they will assist the City of San Fernando with their environmental projects, particularly solid and liquid waste management. Interns will report directly to the City Environment and Natural Resources Officer. Each officer will:


  • Guide the creation of a neighbourhood solid waste management program in one of the City's 38 unserviced barangays (neighbourhood level governments).
  • Assist in the establishment of the city's first septage treatment facility and associated collection system, as well as the implementation of pilot decentralized sewage treatment systems
  • Pursue an additional project related to the environment, sustainability, or development of his/her initiative, taking into account the current activities and needs of the City.

Additional Responsibilities:
  • Help with other day-to-day activities and key events of the San Fernando City Environment & Natural Resources Office, as requested.
  • Identify barriers to participation of marginalized groups (women, youth, ethnic/linguistic groups, elderly, the poor etc.) in environmental initiatives and sustainable development, and develop action plans for engaging these demographics.
  • Assist and work closely with the other Project Officer.
  • Provide updates about San Fernando on the PLUS Network website.
  • Help orient the next round of interns during a period of overlap toward the end of this 6 month internship.
  • Fulfil reporting duties to Sustainable Cities with regular reports, phone conversations, and emails.
  • Develop communication materials (blog posts, newspaper articles, interviews, etc.) for dissemination to the public.

Qualifications:
  • Proficiency in English
  • Education and experience in urban planning, municipal engineering, environmental studies or sustainable development (Undergraduate or Master's degree in relevant field).
  • Knowledge of solid waste and sanitation issues and technologies
  • Previous travel or work experience in a developing country, or a suitable demonstration of cross-cultural skills
  • Ability to be self-directed and work collaboratively with colleagues, partners and counterparts in a complex environment
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Proficiency in use of computer programs including Word, Excel and Power Point.
  • Website maintenance experience, or experience in other planning software such as GIS, is an asset.
  • Strong communication and interaction skills (public presentation and facilitation skills) are essential
  • Professional and personal commitment, flexibility and adaptability to handle new situations and challenges, and the ability to live and work in another culture with an approach that values two-way learning and mutual respect.
  • Strong research and writing skills

Successful candidates must be able to participate in a pre-departure training session July 26th - 30th 2010 in Vancouver, with the expectation of being placed in the field in mid August 2010.

Détails au sujet de l'organisation d'accueil : San Fernando has been a member of the PLUS Network since 2006. They have participated in a peer exchange in Durban on long term integrated planning and local economic development within the informal sector, and in the PLUS Network Biennial Conferences. They have been working on a number of participatory environmental initiatives as part of a World Bank funded environmental management program. They are interested in increasing youth engagement in their environmental initiatives.
